If you’re big on downing beer as a post-workout treat for yourself, you’re going to be interested in this.
It’s a worldwide phenomenon, the pairing of beer and bikes. Many have argued over the years that drinking alcohol after exercise is bad—detrimental, even—and many have also claimed it’s good—beneficial. What’s the real verdict here in all this madness over debating on its effects?
To be honest, it needs much, much, much more research. However, we did discover that a drink or two post-workout isn’t so bad at all. A study was conducted in Spain where 16 men were tasked to exercise in a hot room in order to see whether drinking a modest amount (up to 660 ml) of beer to rehydrate after a grueling hour of workout in heat would have any detrimental effects on an individual. The results would have the bike & beer community pleased.
It was found that drinking a modest amount of beer immediately after exercise has no harmful effect on a person, however drinking water is still necessary whilst enjoying the alcoholic beverage. H2O is still the best means for getting back what you've sweated out during your workout. Needless to say you can have your beer—just, as with most other delicious things we indulge in, it must be done in moderation. That’s still about 1-2 bottles of regular beer you can chug.
Bike away and happy drinking, folks!
